MoreCrop for Barley, an expert system for managing diseases of barley in the Pacific Northwest, was developed by Roland F. Line, USDA-ARS, Wheat Genetics, Physiology, and Disease Research Unit, WSU in Pullman, Washington; Ramon M. Cu, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington; and Don E. Mathre, Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana. MoreCrop for Barley is an adaptation of the MoreCrop model for wheat.

The wheat model of MoreCrop started in 1991 as an expansion of earlier guidelines for integrated control of rusts and other diseases, and it is based on more than 40 years of experience and research data by R.F. Line on crop management, epidemiology, and control of rusts, smuts, and other diseases. Information from other plant pathologists and crop scientists was also utilized. R. M. Cu utilized the existing knowledge on artificial intelligence and expert systems to develop MoreCrop. The acronym MoreCrop (Managerial Option for Reasonable Economical Control of Rusts and Other Pathogens) was carefully selected to have significant meaning to the users. MoreCrop was distributed to the wheat growers and crop advisers in the Pacific Northwest in August 1993 through the Washington State University Cooperative Extension Office as Extension Bulletin MCP0022. A full description of the concept and use of MoreCrop was published by the American Phytopathological Society in the journal Plant Disease (R. M. Cu and R. F. Line. 1994. An expert advisory system for wheat disease management. Plant Dis. 78:209-215). MoreCrop was featured in the Information Technology Workshop during the 6th International Congress of Plant Pathology, Montréal, Canada in 1993. The system was demonstrated at American Phytopathological Society workshops and integrated management meetings and was tested by numerous advisory experts and wheat specialists.

Changes in hardware and software from 1993 to 1998 provided an opportunity to upgrade MoreCrop utilizing new computer technology. MoreCrop version 2.0 for wheat was released in the spring of 1999. The new version was made flexible with a new capability. A powerful database was infused to hold cultivar information. The new features included are enhancement in the crop managerial selection, improvement in data management of cultivars, additional diseases (an increase from 16 to 30 diseases), high resolution images of diseases, and high flexibility in changing the use of fungicides.

MoreCrop was adapted for barley and developed specifically for the PNW in 1999. This application included 24 barley diseases, barley production regions and zones, barley management practices, types and classes of barley cultivars, and disease history. The first version of MoreCrop for Barley was evaluated and distributed later in the fall of 1999.
